Cost of Living

Chapter 2: Cost of Living

Bali can be $1,000/month or $5,000/month. The gap is wider than almost any other nomad destination. Your lifestyle choices — not the destination — determine your budget.

Where to Find Accommodation

  • Facebook Groups: "Bali Long Term Rentals," "Canggu Community," area-specific groups
  • Flokq, Rukita: Coliving/long-term rental platforms
  • Walk around: Seriously — the best deals in Bali are found by walking neighborhoods and looking for "For Rent" signs. This is not a joke. Offline beats online here.

💡 Pro tip: Never pay more than 1 month deposit + 1 month rent upfront. Negotiate. Always negotiate. Starting price is rarely the final price, especially for stays of 3+ months.

Food Costs

Local Food (Warung)

  • Nasi goreng / Mie goreng: 15,000-30,000 IDR ($1-2)
  • Nasi campur: 20,000-35,000 IDR ($1.30-2.25)
  • Fresh juice: 15,000-25,000 IDR ($1-1.60)
  • Local coffee: 10,000-20,000 IDR ($0.65-1.30)

Cafe/Western Food

  • Smoothie bowl (the Bali staple): 65,000-95,000 IDR ($4-6)
  • Avocado toast: 55,000-85,000 IDR ($3.50-5.50)
  • Western breakfast: 75,000-120,000 IDR ($5-8)
  • Good coffee (specialty): 35,000-55,000 IDR ($2.25-3.50)

Restaurants

  • Mid-range dinner: 100,000-200,000 IDR ($6.50-13)
  • Upscale restaurant: 300,000-600,000 IDR ($20-40)
  • Beach club (Finns, Potato Head): 200,000-500,000 IDR ($13-32) per person

Groceries

  • Weekly groceries (local market): 200,000-400,000 IDR ($13-26)
  • Weekly groceries (import supermarket): 500,000-1,000,000 IDR ($32-65)

💡 The budget hack: Eat 2 meals at warungs ($2-4 total) and 1 cafe meal ($5-8). Total food: $250-350/month easily.

Transport

Bali has no public transportation system. Your options:

Motorbike Rental (How 90% of Nomads Get Around)

  • Monthly rental: 700,000-1,200,000 IDR ($45-80)
  • Automatic scooter (Honda Vario/Scoopy): most common
  • Petrol: ~15,000 IDR/liter ($1) — a full tank costs $3-4 and lasts a week of normal use

⚠️ Mandatory: Get an International Driving Permit (IDP) before leaving home. Police checkpoints are common and fines are 500,000 IDR ($32) without proper license. More importantly — your insurance won't cover motorbike accidents without a valid license.

Ride-Hailing (Grab/Gojek)

  • Short ride (5-10 min): 15,000-30,000 IDR ($1-2)
  • Canggu to airport: 100,000-200,000 IDR ($6.50-13)
  • Canggu to Ubud: 150,000-250,000 IDR ($10-16)
  • Surge pricing during rush hour and rain

Car Rental

  • With driver (full day): 600,000-800,000 IDR ($40-52)
  • Self-drive: 350,000-500,000 IDR ($23-32) per day
  • For day trips, hire a driver — Bali roads are not beginner-friendly

Bali vs. Thailand: Cost Comparison

CategoryBaliBangkokChiang Mai
1BR rent (comfortable)$600-1,200$700-1,200$500-800
Local meal$1-2$1.50-3$1-2.50
Cafe meal$4-8$5-10$3-7
Coworking (monthly)$110-250$130-270$85-200
Motorbike rental$45-80N/A (BTS)$60-100
Monthly total (comfortable)$1,900-2,500$2,000-2,800$1,500-2,200

Bottom line: Bali and Chiang Mai are comparable. Bangkok is slightly more expensive. Bali wins on villas and nature; Thailand wins on public transport and street food variety.

Currency & Tipping

  • Currency: Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)
  • Exchange rate: approximately 15,500-16,000 IDR = $1 USD (March 2026)
  • Tipping: Not required but appreciated. 10,000-20,000 IDR for good service at local restaurants. Upscale restaurants often add 10-15% service charge.
  • QRIS (QR code payment) accepted almost everywhere — see Chapter 6: Banking
